Which Hormone is Keeping you Fat?

Avoid Obesity By Standing

Most people spend far too much time sitting. In fact the average office worker sits for 10 hours per day. This large amount of sitting can lead to several health conditions and getting some activity is important. But just the simple act of standing can reduce the risk of obesity

Standing for 1/4 of the day reduces risk of obesity by 32%, men who stand for 1/2 the time reduce the risk by 59%. Women had a slightly lower reduction in the risk of obesity.

Risks of obesity

Obesity is about more than how you look. Obesity is also associated with an increase in the risk of developing several conditions:

  • type 2 diabetes

  • heart disease and stroke

  • high blood pressure

  • some types of cancer

  • osteoarthritis

  • sleep apnea

What can you do?

There are several things you can do to increase the amount of standing you do:

  • Use a standing desk

  • Stand while talking on the phone or on conference calls

  • Walk over to a colleagues desk instead of calling or emailing them

  • Have walking meetings or stand ups instead of sitting meetings. You'll have the added benefit of shorter meetings

  • Cook your own meals, preparing while standing

  • Catch up on household chores like folding clothes, doing dishes or dusting

Of course adding more physical activity into your routine helps. Even 5 minutes, 3 times a week will show some benefits, but you'll want to work up to 30 minutes on 5 to 7 days of the week.
