In 2020 many TV studios were shut down which meant that we didn’t see many actors. When the show 'Billions' returned to production, Paul Giamatti’s weight loss was evident.

Paul Giamatti is an American actor. Aside from ‘Billions’, he is also famous for his roles in ‘Sideways’, ‘American Splendor’, and ‘Barney’s version’.

Paul has not given many details of how he lost the weight but he did talk to Stephen Colbert on the Late Show about his new look.

There was speculation that Paul had lost weight because he was sick or had some health issues, but this is not the case.

How did Paul Giamatti lose the weight?

Paul hasn’t given a lot of details about his weight loss, but here are a few key takeaways.

Even Paul's costars were surprised at the weight loss. When David Costabile was asked how Paul did it he replied "I have no idea".

The extra time during the pandemic allowed Paul to focus on himself. He wanted to strengthen his immune system and because he wasn’t happy with the shape of his body.

He has made a switch to a healthier diet, focusing on low-fat foods and possibly a vegetarian diet. Previously he ate whatever he wanted which meant lots of pizza, sugary drinks and other junk food.

Focusing on foods like lean protein and vegetables is an important component of weight loss. These foods are nutrient dense, allowing you to have lots of energy and also improved hormone balance.

Eliminating foods like pizza and fast food is an important step for weight loss. Other processed foods, grains and starches can also make weight loss difficult.

What changes did Paul make to his exercise routine?

Because of the extra time off during the pandemic Paul was able to add exercise to his routine. He added strength training and yoga. Yoga can also help to reduce stress and lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Strength training is important for maintaining strong muscles and bones and maintaining testosterone levels to keep hormones balanced.

Perhaps his reduced workload allowed him to reduce the stress hormone cortisol, which allowed him to lose hormonal belly fat. His reduction of sugar and junk food would’ve helped to reduce hormone imbalances making weight loss easier.

What did Paul Giamatti look like before he lost weight?

Paul Giamatti is an American actor famous for the show Billions. He was born in New Haven, Connecticut in 1967.

Paul's weight loss was not as dramatic as other celebrities but seemed dramatic because it appeared in the middle of the season of Billions. Filming had stopped suddenly when things shut down in March of 2020. The show did not return for almost a year.

The exact amount of weight that Paul lost has not been made public, but most estimates are around 15 pounds. The exact time frame of the weight loss isn’t known.

Paul Giamatti's healthier lifestyle

There are several areas that I liked Paul’s approach to weight loss.

For the most part, he has used a sensible approach to weight loss. While the 15 lb weight loss seemed quite dramatic, it was over a long period of time. This makes it more likely that he’ll maintain the weight loss.

Reducing his intake of junk food and replacing it with healthy whole foods is a good way to improve his eating habits while still eating delicious food.

For someone in their 50s adding strength training into the routine is important. Not only does it help to build and maintain strength that we lose as we get older, it also helps to maintain muscle, bone density, immunity and maintain metabolism. Yoga also helps to maintain flexibility and balance.

But there are a few things I would do differently.

A focus on a low fat diet is not the best approach for weight loss. Moderate fat intake is necessary for maintaining hormone balance which is key for weight loss. Many people also make the mistake of replacing fat with sugar and starchy carbohydrates which also makes hormone balance difficult. A good balance of healthy fats, carbohydrates and protein are essential for weight loss.

Paul had time during the pandemic to focus on weight loss, but he needs to have a routine that can be maintained so he doesn't return to his old ways and gain the weight back.
